Green Marine Certified since 2016

WCRL is committed to conducting its operations in a sustainable manner. The terminal has been a Green Marine participant since 2016 and renewed its certification every year since joining 8 years ago.

Green Marine is the premier North American environmental certification program for the maritime transportation industry. The program stems from the maritime industry’s voluntary initiative to exceed regulatory requirements. There are currently more than 175 companies – ship owners, port authorities, terminal, and shipyard managers – from coast to coast in the United States and Canada participating in the program.

The Green Marine certification process is a rigorous and transparent program that targets prioritized environmental issues such as greenhouse gases, community impacts, and water and land pollution. Results are independently verified every two years, and each company’s results are published annually and available online.

To receive their certification, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance, have their results verified by an accredited external verifier, and agree to the publication of their individual results. The results determine the participant’s ranking for each performance indicator on a 1-to-5 scale. Level 1 constitutes regulatory monitoring, while Level 5 indicates leadership and excellence. In the latest results published in June 2024, WCRL has achieved the best possible performance – a Level 5 – for the Community Impacts and the Spill Prevention and Stormwater Management performance indicators. WCRL has also earned a Level 4 for the Greenhouse Gases & Air Pollutants and the Environmental leadership performance indicators.

WCRL complete annual results, and those of all certified participants, are published in Green Marine’s Annual performance report, and posted on Green Marine website: https://www.green-marine.org/certification/results/
